Good day, wonderful OUT/CAST contributors, friends, fans, readers, and so on! We’re here to share some news about the status of OUT/CAST going forward. To be clear, we’re not going anywhere! — we just need to step back from our top source of submissions, which means other things are going to need to change as a result. (Feel free to scroll down to the bolded parts if you just want the TL;DR.)
Running a lit mag is expensive. And not just because we pay a monthly fee to use Submittable or keep our website up or what have you, but because performing free labor is expensive. Everyone involved with OUT/CAST is happily in it for the good of the cause, not for the money (because, well there is none — if this were a business, we’d be operating at a loss every month, and that’s how it is at most lit mags). Our goal is to promote and provide a space for queer Midwesterners and their creative works, and that’s why we started OUT/CAST, not to turn a profit (again, *boisterous laughter in lit mag*).
Because of this, we’ve found that we simply can’t afford to self-fund anymore for the foreseeable future, at least from a Submittable standpoint. Probably 95% of our submissions each month come directly from Submittable, so that sucks. But from the handful of email submissions we have received, we’ve learned that our system works in that regard, that people can figure out the process and that we’re able to operate pretty much the same way as we do in Submittable, albeit in a few different platforms as opposed to just the one.
Anyway! What this means is that starting November 1, 2018, OUT/CAST will only accept submissions via email. (All submissions received via Submittable until then will be replied to.)
But wait! There’s more! We’ve also decided to switch to a twice-yearly publishing schedule, which means that instead of December, we aim to release Issue 4 in March 2019. This, of course, means that Issue 5 will be released in September 2019, and so on.
Within the next few days, we’ll be revamping our submission guidelines to reflect these changes (including implementing a new submissions email!) and shutting down our Submittable account, and we’ll keep everyone updated on social media as we do.
Thank you all so much for your continued support! When we launched OUT/CAST in May, we were immediately touched by how quickly people took to our vision and how much support we received. We can’t wait to continue to move forward with you all.
(And, for the record, we’re on PayPal if you ever decide you’d like to toss a few dollars our way. You definitely don’t have to. But the option is there.)
