OUT/CAST publishes fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and visual art every other month about anything Midwestern and/or queer (though neither of these are absolute requirements for publication).

Submissions for Issue 3 are open until September 21, 2018.

For Issue 3, we’ve decided to announce a broad theme: COMMUNICATION. We are looking forward to seeing how writers and artists place the lens of communication within our queer Midwestern aesthetic.

Genre-specific guidelines are below.

You may submit using either Submittable or via email. To submit via email, send your submission to outcastlit@gmail.com with the subject line “[Genre] Submission” (e.g. “Fiction Submission”).

Please include a cover letter where you very briefly tell us about yourself and your submission, as well as a 50-word (or less) third-person bio.

(Pro-tip: We care less about how many times you’ve been published, and more about the work itself, so given the space you have – and with the knowledge that we probably won’t have time to read an essay of a letter – make it count!)

If you are part of the queer community or any other underrepresented communities (especially if you live in the Midwest) and feel comfortable identifying yourself as such, please let us know in your cover letter – your work is more than welcome.

Please do not include any identifying information on the submission including in the file title, submission document, or the title on Submittable. This is so our readers can consider submissions without any outside influence.

Ensure that each piece within a submission is clearly titled and marked. If all works in a submission must be considered as a set (i.e. must be accepted/rejected together), please let us know.

Simultaneous submissions are fine, but let us know right away if a piece is no longer available.

No previously published work, unless it was published in print only. Please inform us when this is the case so we can give proper credit to the outlet of first publication.

Please submit in only one genre per submission period (that is, per issue). We tend to reject multiple submissions from the same person without reading them.

If your work is accepted, please wait until the issue after the one you appear in is released before submitting again. If we cannot accept your work, please wait until the very next issue is released before submitting again.

fiction/CREATIVE nonfiction

  • Send up to three pieces of under 1000 words each.
  • Submit one single-spaced .doc/.docx/.pdf file.
  • Do not include any identifying information anywhere in the document, the file name, or the Submittable title.

poetry

  • Send up to three poems of under 50 lines each (including blank lines—and note our site’s formatting to ensure your poem can be formatted properly if published).
  • Submit one single-spaced .doc/.docx/.pdf file.
  • Do not include any identifying information anywhere in the document, the file name, or the Submittable title.

visual art

  • Send up to three photos, digital art, etc. Size-wise, if it’ll look good on our site, it’s probably fine. JPG, PNG, GIF only.
  • Include the title of each work in its corresponding file name.
  • Include the title, medium, and date of creation for each work in a separate .doc/.docx/.pdf file, as well as an optional artist’s statement (especially if you feel that your work requires context for the editors or the journal’s audience to understand it – we may ask to publish the statement).
  • Do not include any identifying information anywhere in the document, the file name, or the Submittable title.
